| Ladies and Gentlemen, I welcome you all. Today we grather here to celebrate pre-centenary Independence Day. In a year from now we will be celebrating Philippines 100 years of Independence. President Mr. Fidel V. Ramos has laid down a firm political foundation for sustained socio-economic development through accomplishemtns in four areas; The peace process, asocial pact for development, tough actions against warlordism and criminality and the re-imposition of the death penalty. More than anything else, the restoration of political stability has enhanced the overall economic climate. Today, the Philippines is perceived as to be back on its feet, back in business at the Gateway to Asia and the Pacific. Philippines financial stability has been recognized by World Bank and Prestigious Financial and Investment firms. The modernization of countryside airports and seaports and modernization of the safety equipmetns both in air and water transprotation allowed plying of large luxury vessels primarily in domestic maritime rourtes has contributed immensely to economic growth of the country. The President has designated the private sector as the engine of growth in the telecommunications and transportation way back in 1994 and this bore the fruits now in industrialization and economic development. The surge of investments in telecommunications industry which significantly dented the ageold backlog in telephone supply in the country. The liberal implementation of Build-Operate-and-Transfer Law and by ecouraging and designating the private sector has made Subic, once an American Army Base, now into a Industrial hub. The food projects have explored areas of improved processing using to Region's indigenous resources and at the same time eleiminating pollution from the produced wastes. The Acqua Culture Industry by virtue of the scientists developing mono-sex Tilapiya through years of research has put the country at the forefront in this field. Philippine government has fuelled Business Activitiy at the Family and Community level by encouraging small and medium enterprises and livelihood projects by cooperatives and providing credit support. Philippines pursued a policy of diplomacy for economic development in order to promote Philippine products and services and mobilized external resources for investment in Trade and Tourism. Philippines inculcated awareness on zero waste management and encouraged use of lead-free gasoline towards cleaner air. Millions of families have been uplifted though integrated Social Forestry Programmes. Poverty Alleviation Programmes focused on protecting people from material deprivation while generating jobs and assuring study incomes in countryside. |
